Spain Travel Guide

Friendly people, a relaxed lifestyle, great cuisine and a vibrant nightlife not to mention its many beaches are what lure most visitors to Spain. Spain abounds in history, culture and folklore so it’s no wonder it’s a favourite vacation destination to stay in a luxury Spain villa.

From glorious cites like the capital Madrid or the coastal town of Barcelona and its Moorish influenced architecture in Seville and Granada to its age-old traditions like “running of the bulls” in Pamploma; the home of sherry and Flamenco dancing, Spain has a lot more to offer than just beaches.

The Canary Islands in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa are Spanish as are the beautiful Balearic Islands of Majorca (Mallorca in Spanish) and Minorca set off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean. Majorca is the larger of these two islands.

Majorca enjoys a Mediterranean climate which is warm to hot with dry summers reaching temperatures of 20 C by March and highs of 30 C in July and August. Temperatures rarely drop below 25 C between May and August and there’s an average 10 hours of sunshine a day. Winters are mild to cool and wet with temperatures averaging 16 C. It’s perfect for summer beach vacations for couples, families and groups of friends.

Majorca like mainland Spain is full of contrasts from beaches to mountains but is best known for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear Mediterranean waters, so it is not surprising that the island has 8 million visitors every year.

Getting around

For the freedom to come and go as you please opt for a hire car to explore all that Majorca has to offer. Of course there is a good bus service but it does not operate on Sundays or at night out of peak season.

Things to do

Our luxury Majorca rental is located in the friendly and peaceful resort of Costa D’en Blanes on the south west coast of the island but benefits from being only 7 miles from Palma and other places of interest. Costa D’en Blanes sits on the west coast of the Bay of Palma and runs from the hills south of Palma to the coast at Portals and Punta Negra.

Beaches and water sports

Costa D’en Blanes has beautiful beaches of golden sand with calm waters that are family friendly. Just a short drive away you will find the quiet beach of Cala Portals Nous and more beaches 2 miles away at Palma Nova where you can scuba dive, sail and windsurf.

The rest of Majorca has an extensive choice of sandy beaches to discover with your hire car. The beaches on the southern and eastern coasts have the highest concentration of tourists but there are quieter and more secluded beaches tucked away too.

Walking, hiking and cycling

There are scenic trails from Santa Ponsa to Palma and the mountain chain called Serra de Tramuntana along the north-west coast for those looking for adventure and breathtaking scenery.

Keen golfers have Real Golf de Bendinat golf course at their fingertips as it’s just a few minutes from Costa D’en Blanes. In the summer you might also catch a free open-air classical music concert here on Saturday evenings. D’Andratx Golf Club is also only 10 minutes away and these are just 2 of the 18 golf courses across the island which are open to the general public.

Marineland and Aquacity

Visit Marineland to see dolphin and sea lion shows, an aviary of exotic birds, sharks, penguins, pelicans, sea turtles and stingray. There’s also a tropical house full of iguanas, lizards, fresh water fish, piranhas and snakes including boas, anacondas and pythons. Aquacity is a water park with water slides and a wave pool to splash about in. Also attractions the Grand Canyon, Tsunami and Devil’s Tail, a mini zoo, petting farm and parrot shows to entertain the whole family.

Cuevas del Drach

Take a boat trip around The Caves of Drac which consists of 3 chambers, Cueva Blanca (the White Cave), Cueva Negra (the Black Cave) and Cueva Luis Salvator (the Luis Salvator Cave) and the largest subterranean lake in the world, Lago Martel (Lake Martel). You’ll see stalagmites, stalactites and limestone formations whilst being serenaded by musicians playing classical music.

Visit the Capital

In Palma you can admire the impressive gothic Palma Cathedral or La Seu which is protected by the old town walls in Palma Bay and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and Parc de la Mar. Visit the old town of Palma, museums, take a guided tour of The Jewish Quarter and pick up Majorcan gifts and souvenirs.

From Costa D’en Blanes head to nearby exclusive Portals Marina and Portals Nous for fine dining, bars and to see ultra-expensive yachts and maybe the odd celebrity. Palma Nova for beachfront restaurants and bars or head to the capital Palma for more dining options. Try the Paella that is sure to be on most menus and look out for the spicy sausage Sobrassada and Gato, a delicious cake made from almonds whilst you’re here.

  • Restaurante Casa Paco, Portals Nous – Authentic Spanish cuisine popular with locals
  • Gourmet Restaurant Tristan, Portals Nous – Michelin star Majorcan cuisine and views of the Marina
  • Diablito, Porto Portals – Italian cuisine

Night life

Beachfront bars in Costa D’en Blanes offer a relaxing evening or you could brave lively Palma and Magaluf for busy bars and clubs if you dare!

Good to know

  • The Euro is the currency of Spain and therefore Majorca
  • Dialects of both Spanish and Catalan are spoken on Majorca but English is understood and spoken in tourist heavy areas
  • Costa D’en Blanes is 13 miles from Palma Airport
