Renter’s Guide to Atlanta

Cosmopolitan and diverse, Atlanta is a major Southeastern US cultural center and business hub. It serves as the capital city of Georgia and the seat for Fulton County. Notably, Atlanta was the chosen location of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, an achievement that solidified its position as a global city.

Since its beginning, Atlanta has had a mixture of European and African American culture, with recent contributions from Latin American and Asian heritage. The city is also remarkably modern for being located in one of the original 13 colonies. Atlanta was founded around 1847 but was razed during the Civil War, losing many of its antebellum landmarks in the process. The city had to rebuild itself from the ground up and grew into a large municipality.

Atlanta is the largest city in Georgia and among the largest metropolitan areas in the entire Southeastern United States. Atlanta has about half the population of Indianapolis and is roughly equal in population to Colorado Springs. Chicago is approximately six times larger than Atlanta.

Atlanta is located 150 miles from Augusta and 250 miles from Savannah. Birmingham, AL is 150 miles away from Atlanta and Miami lies about 675 miles away. Atlanta and New Orleans are separated by a distance of 475 miles.

The weather in Atlanta is usually hot and humid and its climate is subtropical. Summer temperatures average 80ºF with highs reaching the 90s. In winter, temperatures hover around 44ºF, although Atlanta does see temperatures drop below freezing about 45 days every year.

The seasons are distinct in Atlanta, with winter occurring from December to January, spring from March to May, summer is comprised of June through August, and autumn is from September to November. Rain is plentiful and distributed pretty evenly throughout all 12 months. Snowfall typically doesn’t exceed 2.5 inches in a year. Although the city is too far inland to face many problems from hurricanes, tornadoes are a frequent danger.
